Pittsford: October 31, 2014 at the Shepherd Home at age 89.

On October 31, 2014 at the age of 89.

Don was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 22, 1924. He was the oldest of four siblings. Don is survived by his Brother Gerome (Philadelphia), and nieces and nephews.

He met and married his wife Avis at his parent’s residence in Philadelphia in 1953. They spent many happy years together at their Pittsford, NY home, which they purchased in 1961. Avis passed in 2008.

Don was employed in the Financial Securities Industry most of his life working at Merrill Lynch, and Bach & Company, where on occasion he would broadcast the Evening Stock Report. Don was also involved with Red Squire Real Estate as an agent for a short period of time.

He devoted over 26,000 hours as a Volunteer for the Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance as their Dispatcher, keeping their continuity of service at its best. He also served as a trainer for many of the new volunteer dispatchers. Don was recently honored with a new ambulance being dedicated in his name, which was noted on a Channel 13 report of this event from the Shepard Home.

Don was a learned man who took pride in knowing the facts about current situations. He was a wonderful conversationalist eager to listen and make friends with everyone he met.
Neighbors of the East Street Pittsford Neighborhood coined him the name “Mayor of East Street” as he could be often seen patrolling the neighborhood on one of his many bicycles, many times displaying signs on the stern with words of wisdom or simply “KGB SPY”, which was noted in a Pittsford Post interview about Don.

He enjoyed many outdoor activities from sailing, swimming, motorcycling, as well as keeping his residence landscaped. He was an exhibiting photographer with his main focus being images of the many barns in our area.

Don served in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946, supplying the World War II troops in the South Pacific with the needed supplies to help win the war. Upon returning home he went to college on the GI Bill. Then employed in the field of securities. During this time he met and fell in Love with Avis, who was originally from Louisiana until she came to Philadelphia serving the US Government during World War II.

Don loved to listen to Classical Music, manage stocks, and simply enjoy the beauty of the countryside. He and Avis had many pets over the years, and Norwich Terriers were their favorite, having many over the years.
Avis and Don had no children, but were blessed with many friends over the years. There was seldom a moment when their home was without company sharing the day.

On Saturday, November 22, 2014,from 2pm to 4pm there will be a Special Gathering at The Downtown Presbyterian United Church 121 Fitzhugh St. celebrating what would have been Don’s 90th Birthday.

Friends and Relatives are asked to bring a remembrance story of Don to share in his honor, and an open discussion of his Legacy Project Hospice Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: The Shepherd Home, 1959 Five Mile Line Road, Penfield, NY 14526. The Shepherd Home brought Don a Quality of Life that made his final days precious, peaceful, and worthwhile.
