Diane and Al was a very special presence in my years growing up and babysitting their kids. I enjoyed being with the family because they treated me like family. I remember when on vacation in Roads End in ADK Al saying "I've been to higher places than the Tower". Louie, Steven and Kimmy and Al Jr remember the Tower, right? Your dad was Always a great, funny, generous person and he will always be remembered for that. Love, Jane

I met Al when I was 21 years old. Biologically, I was not his. He accepted me with open arms as if I was and always made me feel like a part of his family. He truly was a beautiful man, one I will always remember for his kind and gentle ways, great smile and fierce devotion to his family. He was so loved, he will be terribly missed.

I have so many amazing memories of my dad. We definitely had a special bond, We were always together! One of my favorite memories was when I was working at the tanning salon in speedy plaza near panorama. I still lived at home with my parents and if my memory serves me right I saw him before I left for work that day. On this particular day about 2 hours into my 4 hour shift, in comes my dad. He was there for a visit. He looked at me with that twinkle he always had in his eyes. He told me he was at home and he saw one of my favorite pieces of candy and it made him miss me. He said it made him miss me so much that he had to come down and visit me. He also told me that day, that he wanted me to know how much he loved me, and he wanted to make sure that I knew it. That was the thing.. I always knew it because he showed me daily. He always made sure I could feel just how much! Oh and of course he brought the piece of candy with him just in case I wanted it. He stayed for about an hour and hung out with me. I have so many stories like that and others that I could share about his laid back loving nature. As my brothers have already stated he never got mad. He was the most amazing father, he never missed anything. He was so devoted to my mother and to all of us. He will be missed terribly and never forgotten. Goodnight, I love you, sweet dreams dad.
Fly high!

It was the summer of 1970 and I remember sitting in the back of a Dodge Monaco convertible. I was covered in green pond scum with my clothes soaking wet. Next to me was my best friend and driving the car was my father, Al Sr. We were on one of our Saturday outings which would many times end up at a park for hiking. On this day, my friend and I had shimmied out on a branch over a pond in an attempt to get a tennis ball that was floating on the top of the green pond water. I was the first to go out on the branch and when I got to the tip of the branch, it snapped and in I went. The scene is still vivid in my mind. I went in feet first and my feet stuck in the mud on the bottom of the pond. I was essentially standing straight up but I was too short and still completely under water. I remember seeing the sunlight coming through the water as I struggled. Complete panic set in and the sunlight disappeared. Not because I was going unconscious but because my father was in mid air jumping in to save me. This for a guy who could not swim and did not know how deep this pond was. He entered the water like a super hero and pulled this little kid out of the mud and out of the water saving my life. The ride home is what made the biggest impact on me though. Much like my older brother so eloquently mentioned in another memory on this page, my father did not get mad at all. Instead he made me feel better and even got me to laugh. I remember thinking to myself, why is this guy not yelling at me for my stupidity? It was really something. In the neighborhood after that, he had hero status. That helped this little kid who did not have his father around full time due to a divorce. It allowed me to boast about the heroics of my father along with an eye witness friend to corroborate the story. I remember friends hearing the story and saying, "you mean you didn't get into trouble?". As the years went on, his easy going nature and humble way was always present and I began to understand as an adult, the true beauty of this man. When he was in the hospital right before having to go to the nursing home, I was visiting and wanted to see if his memory was still ok as he was having good and bad days. I said, "hey Dad, you remember that Saturday when I fell into the pond?" He turned his head in my direction, smiled and said, "yeah, I jumped in and pulled you out". The last time I saw him I was wishing i could jump in and pull him out. Out of the grips of sickness and old age. Unfortunately though, that is not how it works. Rest in peace Dad and thanks for everything. I will carry this name with pride. Love Al Jr.

I have many fond childhood memories of Uncle Al. When I was born, my dad Carmen, my mother Rose and I lived in the same home as my grandparents. Uncle Al was only 15 years old then. He was like an older brother to me, and I was quite a tag along whether it was going bowling or hanging out with is friends in the yard. When he left for the army , I was a heartbroken five year old missing him very much. Uncle Al will always hold a special place in my heart. May he rest in peace.

As his oldest child I didn’t meet my Dad until he had returned from military service. I was a few years old the day he came home. But on my night stand next to my bed was a large picture of him in his military uniform which I kissed each night after saying my prayers before going to sleep.
On the evening of his return was the first time I met him. He showed me how to make a paper airplane and we had fun flying it. Then he went into the kitchen with the adults while I kept playing with the airplane.
When he came back through the kitchen doorway I had just released the plane which struck him in the eye. I was mortified and thought I’d get yelled at. But to my relief he thought it was funny, and that’s when I learned of his easy going sense of humor, which we both enjoyed throughout his life.
We both had a passion for baseball and he was my first little league manager. I lost count of how many times my buddies and I broke windows on the house while playing baseball in our backyard, but Dad never got mad.
Towards the end of his life we were both rewarded for our baseball passion when my son got to play Major League Baseball as a pitcher. Seeing our last name on the back of his jersey was a special joy for all the family, which served as another great bonding moment in our lives.
Rest in bliss Dad

I will miss you Al. I met you when I was 13 and Steven was just born, I became your “go to” babysitter for Louie, Steven and 3 years later your little princess Kimmie. When I outgrew babysitting my sister Jane took over. You paid us 2 or maybe 3 times the average rate. We went on vacations with you and Diane and the kids, had so much fun! I remember bringing my now husband Wayne over to meet you and Diane. You needed something done to your phone lines and you and Wayne bonded real quick going to radio shack to get what you needed. Wayne and you worked through the phone issue and became great friends. Years later still great friends, God Father to my Son Mark. The entire Durham family will miss you terribly.
