Johnnie Paul Lewis, 73, of Rochester, New York, passed away unexpectedly and peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

Johnnie was born in Griffin, Georgia to the late Robert and Hattie Lewis on January 24, 1949. Johnnie grew up in Winter Haven, Florida and attended Jewett High School. After graduating, he moved to Rochester, New York and at age 18, Johnnie began his career at Eastman Kodak as a crane operator, sparking a 35+ year career. Johnnie was passionate about his job and had profound friendships with his work friends, enjoying ski club trips to Canada and playing on “The Animals” softball team. Johnnie was an avid Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees fan. He loved watching sports and being with friends. An enthusiastic nature and music lover, Johnnie looked forward to the annual Lilac Festival and Jazz Festival. Upon retiring from Eastman Kodak at age 57, Johnny and his beloved dog Jeter, enjoyed going for walks in the park, spending time at home and traveling with friends and family.

Johnnie is predeceased by his parents, Robert and Hattie Lewis, and his brother Robert Lewis, Sr. and sister Ruby Lewis.

Left to cherish his memory are his big brothers Eddie Lewis (Celestine) and Thomas LeWeiss, along with many nieces & nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins residing in Huntsville, Alabama, Chattanooga, Tennessee, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Winter Haven, Florida, his best friend Jack Timmerman and dear friends whom he cherished as family.

Calling hours will be held at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 6 Empire Blvd., Rochester, NY 14609, on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 10am-12pm, with a service to immediately follow. Burial will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Rochester, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wilmot Cancer Institute. Johnnie fought a courageous battle with leukemia. He maintained an inconceivable positive attitude and strong faith throughout his journey of treatments and hospitalizations. Johnnie and family are truly grateful to his doctors, nurses and staff at Strong Memorial Hospital for their devoted care.
