Greece
Arleen G. Boyd passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 88 years of age. In her long and fruitful life, she left her imprint on family, the community and her church family.
Arleen was born and grew up in Schenectady, New York. She attended Houghton College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in psychology and gained her teaching qualifications. As a worker in the dining room her sophomore year, she caught the eye of another student worker -- James Boyd. They married on June 17, 1950 and enjoyed a marriage that lasted nearly 66 years.
Early in their marriage, Arleen was employed by Haloid Company, the forerunner to Xerox, for whom she hired the female work staff. She and Jim became the parents of three daughters, Eleanor, Nancy and Janet. In 1965, Jim and Arleen helped to start Northgate Bible Chapel, where they applied their God-given gifts for decades. Arleen was an engaging Bible teacher and mentor to generations of women and children. For more than 40 years, she was a faithful pianist and organist at the chapel, practicing relentlessly and teaching herself hundreds of hymns. In the summer, she volunteered her time at Camp Li Lo Li, near Salamanca, NY, a beloved church camp for children and teens supported by a group of chapels, including Northgate.
A deeply creative person, Arleen was adept at painting, flower arranging, and knitting and crocheting, among other handwork. She discovered the passion of her life in the 1980s, when she took up quilting. Her eye for color and design and her flawless technique resulted in beautiful works of art. Her quilts adorn countless homes and babies' rooms. She won many awards for her quilts, including a first prize at the New York State Fair. The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, bought one of her quilts for display. She was a contributor to several national quilting magazines and books, and she taught many local quilting classes and workshops.
Arleen is survived by her husband, Jim; their three daughters, Eleanor Fox and her husband Ted, Nancy Kennedy and her husband John, and Janet Hallatt and her husband Ken; grandchildren Alissa Owens and her husband Paul, Emily Craig and her husband Tim, Kelsey Hallatt, Abigail Hallatt, and Evan Kennedy; and great-grandchildren Samantha Owens and Seth Craig.
