Barbara Ann Potter Challenger, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2020 in Rochester, NY at the age of 90.
Barb was born in Orange, New Jersey on February 19, 1929. She lived in New Jersey and Delaware throughout her youth and attended the University of Delaware, graduating with a degree in English in 1950. The alumni association of UD was a favorite of Barb's. She raised her 4 children in New Jersey, Wilmington, DE, and Rochester. Barb re-entered the workforce in 1972, starting as the secretary for the Superintendent of the Penfield School District, and later found a career at the Genesee Hospital as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of the Department of Medicine, from where she retired.
Barb was a member of the Penfield United Methodist Church and the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church.
Barb loved to spend time with her family. She was an avid sports fan, the Buffalo Bills biggest fan attending many Bills games over the years. She was a season ticket holder of the Rochester Amerks for many seasons, attending her last game at the age of 90. Barb was an avid golfer, a former member of the Penfield Country Club, golfing in local leagues into her mid 80's. She also loved playing bridge with her friends and was in many bridge clubs throughout the years.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Margaret Potter, her loving brother Dr. H. Phelps "Phil" Potter, Jr., and her ex-husband, Bob Challenger who passed away in 1999.
Barbara's surviving family includes her daughter, Anne FitzSimmons (Michael) of Corning, NY; son, Thomas Challenger (Amy) of Rochester, NY; daughter Tracey Gold (Jeffrey) of E. Greenbush, NY; and son Steven Challenger (Kimberly) of Ridgecrest, CA. Grandma's loving grandchildren are Kara Lorden, Aubrey Challenger, Cody FitzSimmons, Allison Gold, Sarah Sanguinetti, and Kerry Gold; and ten beautiful great-grandchildren who will love hearing family memories about Gigi.
The Challengers, FitzSimmons, and Gold families will be having a Remembrance Gathering, for friends and family, to honor, laugh and cry about our beloved Barbara at Linden Knoll, 81 Linden Ave, Rochester, NY 14610 on February 1, 2020 from 1 to 3 PM. Barbara lived at Linden Knoll for many years and thrived with the love and support of her friends there.
