With heavy hearts and loving memories, we announce the passing of David G. Sercu, who left us on August 6, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on June 16, 1942, David touched the lives of many with his kindness, warmth, and unwavering devotion to family. His journey was one of compassion—a journey filled with laughter, care, and tremendous generosity.

David’s legacy is perhaps best defined by his boundless love as a father—not just to his own children but to many others whose lives he enriched. From 1987 to 2008, David and his beloved wife Joanne opened their home and hearts as foster parents to children in need. While Joanne worked, David dedicated himself fully to providing a nurturing home. His commitment left an indelible mark on all who knew him—every child welcomed by David experienced gentle guidance, patience, and the steadfast presence of someone who truly cared.

Family meant everything to David. He was a very loving father to everyone, never failing to make space in his heart for those who needed him most. His daughter, Linda Sercu (Kellie Mason), survives him, carrying forward his compassion and generosity. He is also remembered with deep affection by his sisters Joyce Klahn, Janet Finley, and Cathy Greene, as well as several nieces and nephews and foster children—each of whom shared a special bond with him over the years.

The memory of David’s beloved wife Joanne remains ever dear, as does that of his brother John Sercu, who preceded him in death. David cherished the connections he kept close, honoring those relationships daily through his gentle spirit and acts of caring.

Outside of his devotion to family and caretaking, David found joy in simple pleasures, including his love of watching wrestling and drinking coffee. This enthusiasm was just one small piece of the fun-loving and approachable man he was—a quality that endeared him to friends, family, and neighbors alike. He was also very proud of his career of service at the Maplewood YMCA, where he retired from in 2020.

Those who knew David G. Sercu will remember not only his graciousness and selflessness but also his ability to offer comfort, humor, and support in everyday moments. His love and guidance were gifts to all who were fortunate enough to share in his life. As we gather to say goodbye, we hold tight to the beautiful legacy he leaves behind—a legacy built on love, care, and the quiet strength of a remarkable father, brother, uncle, and friend.

David’s life will be honored on Saturday, August 15, 2026, beginning with a Visitation from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at New Comer Funeral Home, Westside, 2636 Ridgeway Ave, Rochester, NY.
