Life Story: As far back as I can remember. . . A young girl I once was. Now I was thinking how old I am. I am 70 years old, and feel much older. So where did all the years go in between? Let me try to reflect. I was born in Hume, Illinois on December 29, 1931. I remember a small house, my sister Mary dancing and singing me to sleep. And I remember my first spanking. I was sitting in a highchair and refused to eat. My dad spanked me and I peed my pants. Probably because we were so poor, food couldn't be wasted. My mom worked cleaning other people's homes. My dad worked the farm from sun up to sun down. We moved from there to another bigger house and farm and my dad worked the farm for the owner. We always had plenty to eat. My mother was a wonderful cook. We had fried chicken, our own vegetables, and eggs from our chickens, milk, butter, and cream from our cows. Whenever she would ask me what I wanted to eat, I'd say fried beans. Of course they were not fried; they were made in water and boiled. My favorite was the white great northern bean. They are still my favorite today. My brother Carl helped with the farms. I was in first grade when we moved to Mecca, Indiana - way in the back woods. That is where my brother found the truth and brought it home to us. What a blessed day when we found Jehovah. The only neighbor we had was and old man we called Mr. Fisher, he was one of the anointed. We went once a week and studied the Watch Tower. The Howards treated me every so often with a rhubarb custard pie. It was a small one so I ate it all up, every time. Mr. Fisher made me a wooden toy and a kite. We were there the night he died. I was sleeping on the bed outside his room. And when the door flew open and hit my bed I sat up. It was 3am and Mr. Fisher had died. We just seemed to absorb all the things written in the big Watch Tower magazine. My mother read every word and shared the information with us. She told us about the new world that was coming where no one would be sick any more. I thought that was great, because I had every child hood disease there was. I missed a lot of school. My mom made up the beds at a state park and Carl worked as a chef. Mary and Irena watched me, cleaned the house, made supper for the family, and went to school. Soon Mary left Indianapolis to work and met her husband Dick Dooley. Carl was drafted and had to go to a camp. And when asked to step forward and put a uniform on my brother quoted Acts 5:29 and said, 'we must obey God rather than men' the sergeant got so mad he hit Carl with a billy club and blood squirted straight to the ceiling. The sergeant got his rank broke down to a private and my brother got locked in the crazy house. They thought he was nuts. After two months though, the doctor said "take this boy home, he's no more nuts than I am" so we were happy to get my brother back home. Soon Dick and Mary married. Irena and Carl went to Indianapolis to work. So my dad and mom decided to move back to Hume, where my mom's folks lived in a big 14 room house my grandfather built. We moved in to a four room house at the base of the property. We stayed there for two nights. When my grandfather died, then we had to move in with my grandmother in the big house to take care of her. My uncle Sammy was in the army and we had to wait 8 days for him to get home. So we had pop in the sitting room with the sliding wood doors. He stared to turn green after five days. We had to try to keep the room cool. My brother Carl moved to Paris, Illinois to pioneer and soon started a congregation there. Some others that were pioneering moved in to help. Four families that I remember. Carl took us all to our first big convention at Cleveland Ohio in 1945. They had a whole city it looked like - of tents all organized with lights, bathrooms, and showers. It was summer and warm, so we made out ok. We could hear from our tents or go to the stadium where many thousands of people were there wanting to hear about Jehovah. Well, Carl met his wife to be and he went to the graduation of missionaries at Gilead in Ithaca NY. So we all traveled to Rochester NY to meet the family of Di'Moras. We stayed for a week or so and I loved the city and people. Mr. Di'Mora was one of the Anointed. The stories we heard about him… WOW! He was a Mafia Finger man. He would crawl out of the window at 3am and if he fingered someone to die, they got killed. How he ever found the truth and was accepted as one of the anointed I don't know. But he was kind to me. Carl and Mary got married Feb 1st 1947. Mary's brother Joe got married to Theresa with Mary and Carl, they had a double wedding. I stood up with Mary's cousin Daniel, who I married later that same year, Sept 28th 1947. I was still 15. In Rochester there was only one kingdom hall, a rented room upstairs at Broad St. Our first kingdom hall build was on Merchant's Rd. and Daniel and Carl helped build it. Daniel knew mason work because he worked with his father. When he was 30, he left his father and went to work for an Italian man and learned drywall. He doubled his salary the first year. By the time I was 25 I had 3 children, Dorinda, Diana, and Dana. We moved 5 times and the fifth time we moved into our own place at 4 Hollister St. Around the corner my mom, dad and grandmother lived at 91 Lincoln St. One winter Daniel couldn't find work, my mom paid our bills for 3 months. My days were filled with cleaning my house and taking care of 3 active children and my husband and he had to have sauce made every other day. In 1963 my grandmother and dad died. In Sept 21st we moved into a new house in Greece. There I had another baby April 24, 1965 - My Son Dondi. Now he takes care of me ever since my husband died Aug 17 1995. Then my mother died at age 96 Jan 18 1998, now I guess it's my turn. I was in the hospital for 2 months, I had 3 minor heart failures… twice with pneumonia, a broken foot that got staph germ in it. Jeanette treated every day with some medicine and wrapping it with gauze. Anyway the good news is I have my 2nd great grandbaby Corbin in Reno! And yesterday morning Jan 31st 2003 at 3am little Lydia was born to Mike & Denee. The same year Lorinda gave birth to a boy Zachary James Dec 2 2003. I need to catch up; Lorinda has had 2 more children, Summer Alexis born Aug 16th 2006 and Lana Lucia Born Jan 23rd 2009 and one more… Jasmine Jewel Jan 6th 2011. Now it is Jan 25th of 2011 and I just got to hold my 12th Great grandchild Jasmine Jewel! She was born at home in a baby pool of water. She came so fast, she got pneumonia and had to stay in the hospital for a week. Back to my saga, I have spent all of my winter up in my bedroom. Dondi and Jeanette have moved over to my side of the house, and Joshua & Amber have moved to Dondi's side, Nichole is in Diana's old room. They gutted the kitchen, living room, and tore out all the rugs. Diana has mothers old room. I have just turned 79, and I never thought I would be this old in this system. My husband Daniel has been gone 16 years and would be 86.
