Fresno- Iona F. Hammond, 92, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2019 surrounded by the love of her family.
Iona was born in Brockville, Ontario, on November 13, 1926 to the late George and Alma Gardiner. In July 1945 she married the love of her life, Cecil Hammond. They were married for 17 years until his passing In 1962. Together they raised two children. Iona received her medical degree from the University of Manitoba. She was a general practitioner in Fresno, CA, and retired as a staff physician from Fresno State University when she was 62. Iona and her daughter were active in the animal rescue community, and at one time had rescued 25 cats and dogs. Iona and Cecil's sacrifices to get her through college and medical school remain an inspiration to her family that she leaves behind.
Iona is predeceased by her beloved husband, Cecil.
She is survived by her son, Bruce (Sandi) Hammond, her daughter, Melanie Hammond, her 8 grandchildren, her 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
A private burial will be held in Fresno, CA at a later date at the convenience of the family.
