Edward Albert Maruggi, PhD of Hilton, NY passed away peacefully on November 3, 2024 at the age of 98. He was born on June 30, 1926 at home in Rochester, NY to Teresa and Antonio Maruggi. He is proceeded in death by his children Stephen and Therese Maruggi. He is survived by his spouse of 44 years, Carolyn B. Maruggi, and his children Susan (William) Stokes, Edward, and Matthew (Ann Dohrmann) and grandchildren William (Jacklyn Barcikowski), Benjamin Maruggi, and Sofia Maruggi. He was also beloved by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, friends, and colleagues.
Edward attended Rochester Institute of Technology, Oswego State University, and the University of Minnesota. He began his career at Mixing Equipment Co. on the shop floor, then moved up to drafting. From there he worked in aerospace engineering at General Dynamics and ended it as a Professor Emeritus from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he taught chaired programs in engineering technology for hearing impaired students at NTID. Edward was the author of four textbooks (that he thought “might put you to sleep”) and eight books about Italian-Americans (because as he would say, “I am one”). In 2017, he was awarded the Literary Award by the New York Grand Lodge of OSDIA.
He never lost his sharp intellect or his sense of humor and his ability to make others’ smile. He was a prolific and award-winning winemaker and taster for 61 years and his annual “crushing” parties were enjoyed by many. He enjoyed a glass of wine everyday well into his nineties.
He had many other hobbies, but his most recent hobby was making sea glass pendants, from glass pieces collected from beaches everywhere. For years, he was a bi-monthly columnist for the IACC Italian-American Newspaper. Edward was a world traveler, especially enjoying cruises on ships big and small as well as over 35 trips to Italy. He was an avid Rochester Red Wing fan and season ticket holder beginning with the days of the Knot Hole gang. The Buffalo Bills and NY Mets were also favorites. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family and friends and was often found chatting up strangers that soon became fast friends.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 8, 2024 at New Funeral & Cremation 6 Empire Blvd Rochester, NY from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. Edward's Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, November 9, 2024, 11:00 am at St. Leo's Church, 110 Old Hojack Lane, Hilton, NY 14468.
