Elly, as she was known to her family and friends, died peacefully on November 29th at the age of 96. She was a bright light in many lives and influenced generations of children and adults in the community.
Eleanor Antoinette Volpe, born September 14, 1928, was a lifetime educator and lifelong learner. She began her teaching career as a Sister of Saint Joseph, where she served for 27 years. She went on to be a teacher and principal in the Rochester City School district, bringing together learning and humanity.
Her dedication to reading was acknowledged by the naming of a library in her honor at School No. 50. She rarely mentioned her accomplishments because, while she was giving, caring and respected, she was also humble.
Elly was predeceased by her brother, Joseph and sister, Margaret. She is survived by her brother, Michael — who she said was her “soulmate in life” — and her sister-in-law, Margaret Mary, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, along with the countless children she touched in her life.
There will be a celebration of her life on December 21st at 1:30 p.m. at St. John’s Meadows, Briarwood Building, 1 Johnsarbor Drive, Rochester, NY 14620.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 150 French Road, Rochester, NY 14618 or Hope Hall School, 1612 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624.
