Listen to Obituary

Ellsworth Smith Downs, 104, entered peacefully into the arms of the Lord on December 3rd, surrounded by the love and care of his family. A man of unwavering faith, devotion, and quiet strength, Ellsworth spent his last 25 years living with his daughter Avonne (Vonnie) and son-in-law Joseph, filling their home with wisdom, warmth, and gentle humor.

Ellsworth lived a life rooted in service — to God, to family, Country and to his community. On September 5, 1943, he married the love of his life, Leona, before shipping off to Okinawa during WWII. Known for his tremendous work ethic, thoughtfulness, and deep compassion, he faithfully operated his Agway store for many years, earning the respect of all who knew him. Retirement could never contain his spirit, and he soon found new purpose as a scissor sharpener, affectionately becoming known from New York to Florida as “The Scissor Doctor.”

Blessed with creative hands and a generous heart, Ellsworth painted, crafted ceramics, and later taught himself scroll sawing, making toys for his great granddaughter and heartfelt gifts for family and friends. He approached every task — big or small — with determination, patience, and a belief that nothing was too difficult with God’s help.

During the years he tenderly cared for his beloved wife through her dementia, Ellsworth wrote a book about his life, capturing not only his stories but the deep well of love, faith, and resilience that defined him.

Ellsworth is survived by his children Dana, Richard (Rhea), and Avonne (Joseph), 6 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of devotion, creativity, and Christ-like selflessness that will continue to guide and inspire all who loved him.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 13 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a service at 1:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home at 6 Empire Blvd. Rochester, NY 14609.
