Listen to Obituary

Emma Iris Ayala, a beloved matriarch whose warmth and strength left a lasting impression on all who knew her, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, in Rochester, just one month shy of her 88th birthday. Born in the sunlit town of Luquillo, Puerto Rico, on August 17, 1938, Emma’s journey would come to embody the very essence of devotion, compassion, and enduring family bonds.

Emma’s life began amid the lush beauty of her Puerto Rican homeland, a place whose spirited culture and close-knit sense of community shaped her generous heart and deep love for family. She learned early the value of togetherness and resilience from her parents, Florentino Rodriguez and Cruz Maldonado, who preceded her in death. As Emma matured, these early lessons instilled in her an unfailing capacity to care for others and meet life’s challengers with both grace and determination.

Her life’s tapestry was woven through a loving partnership with her husband, Jose Gariel Ayala, whose memory she cherished until her final days. Together they nurtured a family whose strength and togetherness now serves as a testament to their legacy. Though Emma now joins Jose, their reunion brings solace to those left mourning her absence.

Emma’s legacy shines brightly through her children and extended family. Survived by her devoted sons, Carlos J. Ayala, Ernesto (Norma)  Ayala, and Aris G. Ayala; her loving daughters Eva Ayala, cookie Ayala, Margarita (baby) Ayala, she leaves a close-knit family who carry her spirit in their hearts every day. The love Emma poured into her home radiated out to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins—each held a special place in her life, and, in turn, she became the steady anchor and foundation of theirs.

Emma’s siblings, Elizabeth (Tuli)Rios, and her brother-in-law Jose, also survive her, comforted by the countless memories they shared together—stories of laughter, traditions kept alive, and lessons passed down through each generation. The family remembers the ones gone before her: her beloved husband, her parents, and sadly, her grandson Samual Maldonado Jr. and great-grandson Raven Cooper, as well as her two brothers. Their spirits are ever-present in the shared family history Emma so lovingly tended.

To all who knew her, Emma was more than just the heart of her family; she was the soul of every gathering, the warm embrace after a difficult day, and the gentle voice of encouragement. Her home was always open—a place where joy was multiplied, sorrows lessened, and no visitor left without feeling truly cared for. Emma was a steadfast presence at every milestone and celebration, offering wisdom and tenderness in equal measure.

As her family and friends gather to honor her memory, they celebrate a lifetime spent placing others before herself, fostering unity, and imbuing those around her with confidence and reassurance. Though words cannot capture all that she was, they share in the sorrow of her parting and the gratitude for every precious moment spent with her.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation on July 26, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at New Comer Funeral Home, Eastside, located at 6 Empire Blvd, Rochester, NY. A funeral service will follow on July 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the same location. Emma will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery, 2650 Lake Ave, Rochester, NY 14612.

Emma Iris Ayala’s unwavering love and devotion to her family will forever hold a cherished place in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Her spirit’s gentle touch will echo through generations, a lasting legacy of kindness, strength, and boundless love.
