Ethel A. Gurney
Rochester/Oswego: Passed from this life on Friday, May 25th, 2012, after a brief illness, at the age of 84. Ethel, recently of Cranberry Landing in Irondequoit, was a lifelong resident of Oswego, NY. She was the youngest child of Clarence J Murray and Mary E (McConkey) Murray. She was educated in Oswego schools and worked at several positions including Woolworth's, Osted, the Oswego City Schools and SUNY-Oswego. She was of the Catholic faith. On May 13, 1950, she married the late Lawrence Gurney.
Her son William Gurney of Rochester, son Ronald Gurney and son-in-law Robert Simkins of Utica survive her. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Andrew Gurney, his partner Toni Masci, and Mary Irizarry and her husband Isaac. She also leaves great-granddaughters, Emma Rose Gurney and Grace Lucia Irizarry, all of Rochester. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law Ruth Paige, and many dear friends, especially her life-long friend, Dorothy Bumpus, also survive her. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brothers Charles and William, her sister Mary and her daughter-in-law, Pamela Gurney.
Ethel enjoyed meeting new friends and cherished those she came to know. She also enjoyed bowling on the Osted bowling league and was known for both her drawing and singing abilities. She also enjoyed playing cards with her friends at Simeon-Dewitt, Oswego, during her many years living there. She was known for her love of shopping, but rarely kept the items she bought.
Calling hours will be held from 2-5 PM on Wednseday, May 30th at the New Comer Funeral Home, 2636 Ridgeway Ave., Rochester, NY 14626, with memorial services to immediately follow. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a contribution to your favorite charity.
