Listen to Obituary

The family of Evelyn Louisa Shafer, age 91 is deeply saddened to announce her passing at home in Rochester, New York. Mom’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her great- granddaughters Madelyn Louisa and Clara Elizabeth.

She was born September 28, 1933 in Charlwood, England, the daughter of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Parker.

As a child she experienced World War II in England. She often told stories of that time when she was a young girl. Her village was close to London where the bombings occurred during the war. She provided a living link to the history of our past. Coming of age during this time, instilled in her resilience, strength, and compassion, traits she passed to her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughters.

After the war she met Roy Shafer-her future husband-who was stationed in London during the Korean Conflict. They were married in 1954 and shared their life together for 65 years until his passing in 2019.

Mom enjoyed playing the slots at the casino, listening to polka music, white wine, and the Price is Right. She also loved watching her favorite British T.V. on PBS. Mom was the matriarch of our family who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her brother Alan Parker, Crawley, England and extended family and friends in England, devoted daughter Dawn Shafer; son David Shafer and his wife Page; granddaughters Kelly (Adam) Wagner, Julia Shafer, and Emily Shafer; and great-granddaughters Madelyn and Clara Wagner.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, NY or our local PBS station in Evelyn’s memory.

No prior calling hours.

A memorial service for Mom will be held at a later date.
