Fred H. Schroth lost his year-long battle with esophageal cancer on Saturday, December 22, 2012. He died peacefully with his family near at the Leo Caring Center in Rochester, NY. A Rochester native, he and his twin brother Edwin were born September 6, 1925 to Frank and Estelle (Randall) Schroth. On October 15, 1942 at the age of seventeen he enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Renshaw DD-499 as a Water Tender Third Class in the South Pacific Theater during WWII. He was awarded the American Campaign Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with One Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Bronze Star and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He was discharged November 18, 1946 and returned to Rochester. After WWII being still "unsettled", as he described it, he re-enlisted at Buffalo, NY April 29, 1947 where he served in the Army 82nd Airborne as a technician and a member of the Military Police. He attained the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant, completed 23 parachute jumps by the time of his discharge on February 3, 1950.
Fred lived in the Rochester area all of his life. On May 28, 1955 he married Geneva Tyler Schroth at the Lake Avenue Church of the Nazarene in Rochester. In 1960 they settled in Clarendon where they raised their five children: Nyla, Joan, Paul, Linda and Peter. He worked at Rochester Products for 31 years, retiring in 1986. In 1997 he moved to Brighton to be near Geneva during her five year stay at Monroe Community Hospital. He was at her side every day and served as a volunteer there for seven years. He was awarded the Monroe Community Hospital Volunteer of the Year Award in 2003.
Following the death of Geneva, in 2004 he married B. Jane Peachey and became a beloved step-parent to her twelve children and their families.
Fred will be remembered for his love of children, history, talk radio, special way with dogs, love for his family and sense of humor.
Fred is preceded in death by his wife of forty nine years, Geneva Tyler Schroth, infant twins, his sister Leona and his brother Frank. He is survived by his twin brother Edwin, Jane, his wife of eight years and his children: Nyla (Schroth) Gaylord of Clarendon, Joan Schroth of Rochester, Paul (Sharon) Schroth of Evington, VA, Linda Schroth of Accokeek, MD and Peter (Sandy) Schroth of Fairport . He was a proud grandparent and step grandparent and leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, December 26th at the First Baptist Church of Rochester, 175 Allens Creek Road, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at 12:30 pm at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Following interment, friends are invited to join the family at 1:00 pm for lunch and a time of fellowship at the church.
