Gary Bains, a beloved member of his community, passed away December 8, 2024, in Fairport, New York, at the age of 72. Born on March 3, 1952, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Gary left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Gary built a successful career after earning his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from George Mason University in Virginia. He dedicated many years of his life to his work at Xerox, where he was respected for his expertise and considered a friend by all his colleagues.
Known for his compassionate and sensitive nature, Gary was well loved by many. He had a wonderful sense of humor and people always enjoyed his stories. He had a unique ability to form friendships effortlessly and made connections with everyone he met, including all his friends and neighbors at the Residences at Canal Side. A passionate observer of the natural world, he immersed himself in the details of his surroundings, finding joy and wonder in everything from the vastness of the cosmos to the intricate designs of everyday life.
Outside of his professional life, Gary's interests were diverse and deeply felt. He possessed a keen curiosity about science, dedicating time to explore subjects ranging from physics to astronomy. An avid cyclist, he enjoyed riding along the scenic Erie Canal, finding peace and enjoyment in the rhythm of pedaling. Gary was also a devoted birdwatcher, loved ice skating, and was a talented cook known for his delightful dishes. His hands were not only skilled in the kitchen but also when it came to building computers and other electronics, reflecting his passion for ingenuity and technology.
Gary is survived by his daughter, Destiny Sampsell; his grandson, Connor; his sister, Anita (Tracey Middleton) Bains; his brother, John (Esther) Bains; nephews, David and John; nieces, Brenda, Denise, and Danielle; as well as many cousins, great nephews and nieces, and friends. Additionally, he leaves behind his dear friend, Lauren Frasier, who cherished their friendship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Arthur Bains and Sophie Bains; his brother, Dennis Bains; and dear friends Richard Fink and James Hamlin.
Gary's family would like to extend a special thank you to the team at Chambers Home Care Agency who gave him such loving and compassionate care. As well as a thanks to all the staff and caregivers at Rochester General Home Hospice Care who were available to them around the clock and helped make Gary's final days peaceful.
Gary's legacy of kindness, curiosity, and friendship will continue to resonate in the lives he touched. His family and friends are grateful for the love and warmth he shared and will hold onto the many cherished memories they created together.
