Irondequoit: Passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 10, 2013. George was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Marion Schakow; his wife of 53 years, Dolores; son, Richard and brother, Robert. He is survived by his daughters, Denise (Jim) Dill, Kyle Smith and Sherry; and son, Thomas; grandchildren, James, Robert, Caitlyn and Michael Dill, Samantha and Travis Smith and Richard, Patrick Schakow; as well as several cousins and many dear friends. George was an All City football player at Edison Tech and a combat veteran of the Korean War. While serving in the Infantry with the 1st Cavalry Division, he earned a Purple Heart and the Combat Infantrymans Badge. George retired from Xerox Corp. after 40 years of service. He loved playing racquetball at the YMCA and golf at Shadow Pines, where he also worked. George was actively involved in the Laurelton Volunteer Fire Dept. and had the honor of being past Chief and Fire Commissioner. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing at the family cottage. George will be greatly missed by his friends and family. His memory will remain in our hearts forever.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 13 from 4-8 PM and Thursday, March 14 from 10-11AM at the New Comer Funeral Home, 6 Empire Blvd., where Funeral Services will follow at 11AM. Interment will immediately follow at White Haven Memorial Park. For those wishing please consider honoring George with a donation to your favorite charity.
