Gertrude Denise Johnson-Rucker passed away on February 12, 2026, in Rochester, New York, at the age of 51. Denise was a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished daughter, sister, aunt, and friend whose presence brought strength and impact to everyone who knew her.
Denise was born in San Antonio, Texas, and raised in Rochester, New York, where she built deep roots and lifelong connections. She also spent several years living in Charlotte, North Carolina, where she formed many lifelong friendships and created lasting memories with those who became like family to her.
She was committed to personal growth and education, earning a Master’s degree in Public Health Administration at Pfeiffer University. Known for her love of fashion and impeccable style, she was always dressed with confidence and intention. Denise had a strong and confident personality, carrying herself with grace and presence wherever she went. She found great joy in good food, memorable experiences, and living life fully, embracing the things that brought her happiness.
Denise was known for her powerful presence, vibrant personality, and unapologetic spirit. She had a commanding energy and a way of making every space feel alive. She valued her loved ones deeply and was fiercely protective of those she cared about. She especially enjoyed great food and traveling, embracing new places, flavors, and experiences with enthusiasm.
She was predeceased by her brother, Harry Carr.
Denise leaves to honor her memory her adoring and loving husband, Shawn H. Rucker; her daughter, Bryani Denise Holli Woods; her father, Harry Johnson; her mother, Marsha D. Johnson-Okung; her sister, Sharelle D. Williams; her siblings, Eno Okung, Victoria Lachoo, and Atim Okung; her beloved nephews, Colton Williams, Chancellor Okung, and Nasir “Bless” Williams; her aunt, Lentory Johnson; and a host of loving relatives and dear friends.
Denise’s strength, style, and unforgettable presence will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love, confidence, and resilience will never be forgotten.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 17 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, with a service immediately following from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 6 Empire Boulevard, Rochester, New York.
