Irene Marrero (née Robinson), a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025. Born on October 8, 1931, Irene led a life rich with purpose, compassion, and zeal for music and service.
Her academic journey began at the Rochester Business Institute, where she laid the foundation for an impressive career in the medical records field. Starting with Monroe County Welfare Medical Records Department and later at Genesee Hospital Medical Records Department, she dedicated her professional life to the Urban-Suburban Interdistrict Transfer Program until her retirement. Irene's commitment to her work reflected her passion for helping others.
Irene’s love for music was evident throughout her life as she sang in the original St. Simon's choir, and later, the St. Luke and St. Simon's choir and the African American Women's Gospel Choir (AKOMA). During her teen years, she volunteered her time as a Candy Striper at the Red Cross and at the Canandaigua Veterans Hospital, embodying the spirit of selflessness. Her affiliations continued throughout her life with memberships in the VFW, the American Legion, the Genesee Valley Marine Corps League Auxiliary, and the Red Hats, all of which exemplified her dedication to service.
Irene will be lovingly remembered by her spouse of 65 years, Jesu Marrero; her son, Robert (Laura) A. Marrero, and her daughter, Anita-Irene (William) Marrero-Hucks. Her legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren: Gabriele, Daniel, Venus, William, Mari, Asia, and Nubia. She cherished numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends, all of whom were touched by her warmth and kindness.
Irene was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rufus and Lucille Robinson, as well as her eldest son, Michael A. Marrero, and her siblings, Juanita Robinson, Rufus Robinson, Robert "Rab" Robinson, John Robinson, Merritt "Merty" Robinson, Claude James "Jimmy" Robinson, and Richard "Dickie" Robinson.
Her contributions to her family, friends, and community will leave a lasting impact on all who had the honor of knowing her. The service to celebrate Irene's life will take place at The Church of St. Luke & St. Simon Cyrene on 17 S Fitzhugh St, Rochester NY 14614, on August 23, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM. Following the service, inurnment will proceed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 2461 Lake Ave, Rochester, NY 14612.
Irene's legacy of love, service, and song will remain an enduring memory in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
