To know Jean/Mom was to know love, joy, laughter, faith, goodness, and compassion. She had a servant's heart. She served others her entire life, whether it was volunteering at school, church, or being a listening ear on the phone or in person. She took care of others and never sought anything in return. She exemplified loving her neighbor as herself (Leviticus 19:18). She spent 6 1/2 years caring for Don/Dad at St. John's Home, even as Vascular Dementia slowly began to set in. Just one year after Dad’s death, she became a resident at St. John's Home.

Over the course of the 4+ years that she was at St. John's, the warmth, love, and light that had always been Mom never dimmed, even as her memory did. She sped around St. John's in her wheelchair, engaging with anyone and everyone she could. She even had a few boyfriends that we told her dad would approve of!

She loved going on walks all over St. John's campus. We were regularly approached by staff members coming over to say hi to her. EVERYONE knew Mom- she was like the mayor of St. John’s. We used to wonder how someone with mid-to-late-stage dementia could be so well known, so well-liked. But then we would stop and tell ourselves -that’s just who she is. That’s who she always was- and that’s who she was created to be. Mom was so very special. The Lord created her that way. Before she was born, she was set apart (Jeremiah 1:5). She was His masterpiece (Ephesians 2:10), and He gave her to all of us for 80 amazing years.

In the last years of her life, she “lived, laughed, and loved.” That was very important to her. She went to church often at St. John's, and she grew closer and closer to her Lord and Savior. Vascular Dementia could not, and would not, take her faith from her. On May 3rd, she heard Jesus say, “Well done, Jean, you were a good and faithful servant.” And then she heard dad say, “I’m right here, sweetheart…I am still your man.” She is at peace now with her Lord and with “her man,” and there is no more pain and no more tears (Revelation 21:4).

If you ever doubt that God can use you just as you are- DON’T! He chose to shine even brighter through His daughter Jean despite the deepening Dementia. She was such a bright light, and we will miss her smile, her laugh, and the beauty of her presence more than words can convey.

The family would personally like to thank St. John's Home for the amazing care that they gave to our mother over the last 4+ years of her life. We would be remiss in not mentioning that St. John's gave incredible care to both our parents since 2013. We would like to thank the staff on Hastings 3- the floor that mom called home for 4+ years, the medical staff that cared for her acute needs when they arose, the Spiritual Care Team that cared for Mom spiritually and the staff on South 5, where she lived for the last weeks of her life. Thank you to all the staff at St. John’s Home for your care, compassion, and love for our mother that made it easier for us to go home after each visit. Know that you made a difference, and we are forever thankful!

No prior calling hours.

Mom's Service of Victory will be 10am Saturday July 12, 2025, at Faith Lutheran Church, 2576 Browncroft Blvd, Rochester, NY 14625.
