John Joseph Foley, born July 25, 1927 in Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2014 at age 86.
Predeceased by parents William and Anna (Flannery) Foley and sister Margaret "Peggy" Murphy, he is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara; sisters Anne "Nancy" McBride, Teresa "Terry" Connorton; brother-in-law, James Murphy; children Barbara Kowalski (Ray) of Syracuse, NY, John "Jack" (Lizette) of Irondequoit, NY, Susan of New Castle, NH, Thomas of Cleveland, OH, Katherine Smyth (Mark) of Pittsford, NY, Patricia Bartfay (Andrew) of North Andover, MA, Christine Deverdzic of Gardiner, NY, Betsy Shakespeare (Matthew) of Newburyport, MA; grandchildren Matthew, Stephen, Daniel, John Paul Foley, John Quilter, Elizabeth Paz, Kelly Haney, Ryan and Carly Smyth , Natalie and Katherine Bartfay, Lydia, Julia, Alexandra, Kristina and Peter Deverdzic, Oliver and Gemma Shakespeare; many nieces and nephews.
John graduated from Aquinas Institute in 1945 and then served in the Navy. Later he graduated from Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. After volunteering for a fund raising drive at his family's parish of Sacred Heart Cathedral he joined the firm Newcombe Associates. On assignment in 1953 at St. Anne's Parish in Wausau, Wisconsin he met his future wife, Barbara.
John later started his own fund-raising firm and ran over two thousand successful campaigns nation-wide as Foley Associates, Inc. One of his first campaigns in the Rochester diocese was for St. Thomas More where his Funeral Mass will be held.
John, an avid golfer, was a member of several country clubs in the area and worked to organize large golf tournaments. He also served as a member on local boards.
Sacred Heart Cathedral played an important part in John's life. As a boy, John sang at many occasions at the Cathedral where he attended school, as did all of his eight children. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted brother, husband, father, and grandfather.
The family wishes to thank the staff at The Friendly Home's Memory Unit. In lieu of flowers, Masses can be offered or contributions made in his name to the current capital fund raising campaign at St. Thomas More.
The family will receive friends at New Comer Funeral Home, 6 Empire Blvd. from 4 pm-7 pm on Monday, January 20th. All are invited to bring a note or photo for a memory book. His funeral Mass at St. Thomas More, 2617 East Ave. will be at 10 am on Tuesday, January 21st.
Private interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery at a later date.
