John 10:27-28 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand."
On August 9, 2025, John Harold Shafer, 86 years old, inherited the life eternal promised him through faith by his Good Shepherd and sealed in the Lamb's Book of Life.
John loved the Lord, and spent time with Him in the Word and prayer. Now, he no longer needs to read his Bible; he sees his Savior face to face, the Living Word!
He is predeceased by his parents Mary Elizabeth (Betty McColley) Shafer and Harold Herman (Pep) Shafer as well as many beloved uncles, aunts, cousins, and dear friends.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Patricia Jeanette (Turney) Shafer; children: Anne (Brian) Bundschuh, Pam (Keith) Frieling, Sue (Ron) Wojtas, and Scott (Cheri) Shafer; grandchildren: Rachel (Jon) Goehring, Aaron Bundschuh, Jacob (Krista) Bundschuh, Rebekah Bundschuh, Daniel (Olivia) Frieling, Timothy Frieling, Alyssa (Matt Kelly) Frieling, Sarah and Anna Wojtas, Caleb (Alexis Frantz) Shafer, and Olivia Shafer; great grandchild: Baby Boy Shafer, due 9/9/2025, as well as many other extended family members and dear friends.
John was a graduate of The Ohio State University where he earned 3 varsity letters in lacrosse, co-captained during his senior year, and is still on the wall of fame at OSU for leading the lacrosse team in scoring in both his junior and senior years. While there, he was a member of Sigma Theta Tau. John completed his masters of science in Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, and worked for 35 years in various management positions in optical design and engineering at Eastman Kodak Company. He was a 2019 inductee into The Niagara Frontier Aviation and Space Hall of Fame, and a 2019 inductee in The Distinguished Hall of Fame for Napoleon High School in Ohio.
John and his engineering team hold a United States patent for developing a production method of molding glass elements. John is a self-published author of, Gambit, Gambit Cubed & Dorian: Optical Metrology and Process Development at Kodak, which was accepted into the United States Library of Congress June 26th, 2024, and he also authored, The Amazing Kodak Disc Camera Lens. The Gambit Spy Satellite is currently on display at the Strassenburg Planetarium in Rochester, NY, where you can find many kiosks of John and his co- collaborators explaining their involvement in helping to prevent WWIII. Along with these accomplishments, John valued serving in ministry at Hope Lutheran Church, documenting genealogy back to Adam, spending time on the golf course, photographing meaningful moments, and creating traditions and special times with family.
