John passed away on October 21, 2026 at age 84 after a 25 year battle with Parkinsons that he handled the same way he handled everything else: without complaint.
He is predeceased by his sons Ray, Rick (Dewitt), sisters Marilyn L. Bikos (“Tootsie”) and Betty Ellis; brothers, Richard, Bob, and Fred Welch; parents, Daniel and Pearl Welch. He is survived by his brothers, Bill and Ray Welch, son Keith (Rita), Tim, Richard (“Rick”), Louis, Carmen, Rene, Eric, Ric (Vicens), Gene (Watson), Hanh, Han, and Phuc (Trinh), Peter (Santiago) and his many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
John worked over 30 years at Xerox as a design engineer and after retiring enjoyed working part time at The Home Depot. He loved all kinds of sports (including motor sports and racing), golfing, bowling, skiing and of course his dogs he had throughout his life.
He dedicated his life to helping and mentoring many foster children throughout the past six decades and is recognized by Monroe County as an advocate of the Judicial Process Commission, trainer for Monroe County Foster Care and most of all, for his devotion, commitment and generosity he gave to all children.
John was one of a kind. It has been said that it takes a community to raise a child and John was a huge part of that community where he impacted so many lives. He will be missed but never forgotten.
During the past few years, John had been receiving loving care from all the wonderful staff at The Hurlbut Nursing Home.
At this time, a private family service will be held but a celebration of life is planned for a later date.
