Joseph C. Zona, born on May 20, 1964, passed away on January 20, 2026. Joseph was not only a fixture in the lives of those around him but also a source of strength and laughter. His personality reflected his essence—he was a best friend, a protector, and a partner in crime, embodying a spirit that resonated deeply with everyone fortunate enough to have known him. His ability to speak his mind, coupled with a sense of humor that brought joy to many, made him a cherished presence in the lives he touched.
Joseph's commitment to his country was significant; he proudly served in the US Navy aboard the CGN USS South Carolina. His military career included completion of the Marine Corps Stinger Program and service as a Gunner's Mate, where he contributed to the Special Warfare Unit 20 in 1988. Stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, he was a dedicated member of the MEF Group out of SBU 20 in NAB Little Creek, a role he embraced with pride and honor.
Beyond his military devotion, Joseph found immense joy in his hobbies and interests. He loved camping, sport shooting, fishing, and bonfires. His passion for hunting and playing euchre, combined with a philosophy of living life on his own terms, characterized his approach to life—one filled with adventure and zest.
Joseph is survived by his sisters, Peggy (Bill) Dube, Julie Zona, Anita (Walt) Nellenbach; his brother, Phillip (Adrienne) Zona; his niece, Maryann (Cruz) Mendoza; and his best friend, Bob (Jen) Radigan. He is also remembered fondly by many great nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and his beloved dogs, Rembrandt and Siri.
He is predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Philip Zona, and his brother, Eugene Zona, his childhood friend, Allen Wannamaker, along with his dearly departed dogs.
A visitation will be held on February 21, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM, both taking place at New Comer Funeral Home, Westside, located at 2636 Ridgeway Ave, Rochester, NY 14626.
Joseph C. Zona will be remembered not only for his robust character and warm spirit but also for the lasting impact he made in the hearts of those who loved him. His legacy of kindness, humor, and friendship will forever be cherished.
