Kurt Karl Thiel, 89, Webster, died March 16, 2011, less than two months after the death of his beloved wife of 64 years, Lora. Kurt was born in 1921 in Elbing, East Germany. He traveled to the US by himself on a steamship when he was just eight years old to join his father Karl, who was living and working in New York City. Family was the center of his existence and his life was guided by his religious faith as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kurt was the proprietor of Kurt's Garage on Hudson Ave. until his retirement. He could fix just about anything and always came up with ingenious inventions to solve practical problems. Kurt served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and honorably served in the Army from 1939-45. In 1992, Kurt was bestowed as Gardener of the Year of the Irondequoit Garden Club. In 1997, Kurt was honored for his service to the Boy Scouts by receiving the Silver Beaver Award.

He is survived by his six children: Sandra Theodore (Alex), Coweta, Oklahoma; Daniel Thiel (Elizabeth), Webster, NY; Dr. Robert Thiel (Leslie), Chesapeake, VA; Kathlene Thiel (J. Eric King), Albany, NY; Wanda Amann (Paul), Salt Lake City, UT; Kurt Thiel II (Sara), Canandaigua, NY and his companion, Schwartz the cat. He also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Kurt's family is grateful to all the staff of the Burn Trauma Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital for the excellent care of Kurt during the last three weeks. A private family service was held on March 18 and Kurt was laid to rest beside his beloved Lora at Irondequoit Cemetery. Contributions can be made to: Camp Massawepie c/o Seneca Waterways Council BSA, 474 East Ave, Rochester, NY 14607
