Leverne Mouzon known as “Bookie”
Born in South Carolina to the late Randolph Mouzon and Emma Mouzon. Leverne is one of 10 children, and he falls in the middle. The Mouzon’s relocated to Rochester, NY where he grew up from a young child. Leverne went to Carthage #8 school, and Frederick Douglas Middle school, he graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School in 1978. He immediately joined the Marines and was sent to Camp LeJeune where he served until 1984 as a Gunner. He was honorably discharged. During his earlier years Leverne was a boxer at the Baden Street Settlement in Rochester, NY. It was nothing for Leverne to run from Lill Street across the bridge to the other side of town and back… he stayed moving with those skinny legs. Leverne also boxed in the Marines and won titles as a “welter weight”. He won many trophies and was featured in the newspaper several times during his fighting years. His trainer and coach … Coach Johnson was always looking for the next move he saw the love and passion Leverne had for boxing. Leverne worked at several companies in Rochester, NY after his military years relocated to Florida with his late wife Marian Mouzon. Leverne loved his family and truly was a giver. Every time he would see his nieces or nephew, he always pulled out a piece of money and said, “go buy yourself something”. That was his way of saying I love you and I am Uncle Bookie. One thing Leverne loved was music, dancing and laughing, he had a knack for making the atmosphere light. He would get so tickled and just laugh. He would always say “can skinna get a dinna”. His hobbies included fishing and chilling with those he loved. His last years on this earth was spent in Atlanta, GA with his sister (Angela) and nephew (Hasheim). Leverne’s health began to fail rapidly within the last couple of years with his passing on January 3. Predeceased was his father Randolph Mouzon, his brother tony, his late wife Marian Mouzon. He is survived by his Mother Emma Mouzon, his stepdaughter Angie Hodo, 2 grandchildren (Jordan and Jurnee Voltaire), Godsons (Jonathan Rowe of Atlanta, GA and Justin Holiday of Rochester, NY), 5 sisters (Minnie (James) Thomas, Eileen Mouzon of Rochester, NY, Dr. Bernetha, Cynthia, Angela Mouzon of Atlanta, GA), 3 brothers Ronald and Freddie of Rochester, NY and Randy Mouzon of Binghamton, NY. 1 Aunt & Uncle (Rev.
