Mallue “Prince” Shaw was born on August 15, 1941, in Kingstree, South Carolina, to Samuel and Azalea (McClary) Shaw. He was the youngest of nine children and was lovingly cared for by his older siblings. He worked on the family farm while growing up and attended and graduated from high school in Kingstree.
When he was younger, he worked on the family farm as well as took piano lessons. While in high school, he also worked as a school bus driver. He would complete his chores before school, pick up his classmates on the bus, attend classes alongside them, and then drive everyone home at the end of the day. He also sang in the choir and played the trombone. After graduating from Tomlinson high school, he relocated to Rochester, New York, where several of his siblings already resided.
A few years later, Jannette McGill moved from Kingstree to Rochester. The two had known each other since childhood, as their family farms were near one another. They married in Rochester in 1967. Mallue loved providing for his wife and their three children: Cassandra (Sandra), Veronica (Ronnie), and Bryant.
Mallue was known for always holding multiple jobs at once. He worked simultaneously for Eastman School of Music and Eastman Kodak, and later worked at Eastman Kodak while driving a school bus for National/Laidlaw. He maintained two jobs for decades, eventually retiring from both Eastman School of Music and Eastman Kodak, but continued driving school buses for the same company (later becoming First Student) until the age of 76. By the time he retired from First Student, he had worked there for more than 40 years and held the highest seniority, allowing him to choose his favorite route each year—the Allendale Columbia route. For some students, he was their bus driver from kindergarten through high school graduation. He often reflected on enjoying his jobs, though he disliked “moving those big pianos” while working at Eastman School of Music. When asked why he continued working part-time long after retiring from two full-time jobs, he would say, “When you stop moving and sit down, you die, and I don’t want to stay home with ya’ Grandmonster all day.” The “Grandmonster” was Jannette. He also occasionally drove charter buses, transporting passengers to Toronto and New York City.
Mallue and Jannette were members of Church of the Resurrection and later attended Grace Unity Fellowship Church until health concerns prevented regular attendance. At both churches, they volunteered in various ministries.
His hobbies included visiting OTB, the casino, Family Dollar, Tops, the bank, and the car wash. He enjoyed maintaining his vehicles and could always find something around the house to repair. He especially loved watching wrestling and tuned in whenever it aired. He regularly watched Perry Mason, Columbo, Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, Beverly Hills Cop, and Walker, Texas Ranger. Mallue also enjoyed Westerns. Growing up, his family did not own a television, so he would pay a quarter to watch someone else’s TV—and Westerns were all they watched.
His greatest joy was caring for and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He would secretly hand them money and would purchase them things their parents said they could not have. He also delighted in sharing stories from his childhood. There was always something new to learn about him through his stories.
Mallue was a caring, compassionate, and selfless man. He was generous, practical, and always willing to help others, no matter who asked. Though a man of few words, his presence and thoughts were always felt and understood.
After 84 years of life, Mallue entered his rest peacefully on May 9, 2026, at Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Azalea Shaw; all eight of his older siblings: Marion (Sulie) Shaw, Jannie (Mozell) June, Alberta (Willie) Allen, Eunice (Frank) Tisdale, Mannie (Florie) Shaw, Melton (Georgia) Shaw, Samuel (Cornelius) Shaw Jr., and Harold (Zora Lee) Shaw; his daughter, Veronica Shaw; his grandson, Donovan Shaw; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 59 years, Jannette McGill Shaw; sisters-in-law, Georgia Shaw of Kingstree, South Carolina, and Zora Lee Shaw of Rochester, New York; daughter Cassandra (Kenneth) June of Kingstree, South Carolina; son Bryant (Michelle) Shaw of Rochester, New York; grandsons Brandon (Monique) Johnson, Kenneth (Carissa) Johnson, and Jhamar June, all of Kingstree, South Carolina; granddaughters Lashonda (Avery) June of Kingstree, South Carolina, and Briiana (Jason) Sharp of Rochester, New York; great-granddaughters Nijeria Johnson, Alaina Sharp, Meah Shaw, Aria Sharp, and Aleeyah Shaw; great-grandsons Nazir Johnson, Blake Shaw, and Nazaree Johnson; one great-great-grandson, Nile Johnson; and a host of many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and family members.
