Mary E. Spurrier

Rochester, NY

September 16, 1943 – October 29, 2026

Born in Minneapolis, MN, Mary Spurrier lived a full and rewarding life, enriched by love of family and friends, a commitment to women's issues, a passion for the arts, and a spirit of philanthropy.

She received a Bachelor's degree in home economics at the University of Minnesota, became a wife and mother, and pursued a successful career in business and financial planning. Eventually, Mary became an entrepreneur. After spending more than 20 years at large investment firms, in 1995 she founded M. Spurrier Financial Services. This union of Mary's financial expertise and her commitment to women advanced her lifelong goal of helping women reach their financial potential.

Mary was a true art enthusiast and a dedicated patron of the arts, including but not limited to, glass sculpture and indigenous art. She recently sponsored the exhibit “Tough Stuff: Women in the American Glass Studio” at the Corning Museum of Glass. Her generous philanthropic endeavors were well known, and many helped to support young artists through the years.

On a more personal note, Mary was a lover of reading, animals, quilts, weaving, felting, carousel horses, Opus and Bloom County comics, and all things orange.

Mary is survived by her husband, Gary Gutfrucht; son, Christopher Jude Spurrier; sister, Elizabeth “Betsey” (Eugene) Fritz; brother-in-law, Alan (Mary) Gutfrucht; sisters-in-law, Gail Gutfrucht and Karen Douglas; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
