Melvin “Butch” Race Jr. beloved by all the lives he touched, passed away on September 16, 2024 in Rochester, New York, at the age of 64. Born on November 28, 1959, in Cortland, New York, Butch was larger than life, standing tall at 6'4".
Throughout his life, Butch exemplified commitment and dedication, particularly to his family, whom he cherished deeply. He is survived by his devoted mother, Jean France; his long-time partner, Maryann Turpyn; his brothers Dale (Iris) Race, Clarence (Theresa) Race and sister Vicky (Chad) Tiffany; his daughters, Amber (Jeffrey) Lyon, Emilie Rodman, Amanda Race and Andrea (Joshua) Welch. Butch took great joy in being a grandfather to Gavin, Kayla, Lilianna and Donatello with whom he shared countless memorable moments. He also embraced countless friends into his heart and considered them family.
Butch was an avid fisherman, finding happiness and joy fishing in Oneida Lake, and had a penchant for hunting, both activities that allowed him to enjoy the outdoors.
Butch’s proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly centered around his family and grandchildren. His greatest joy in life was being “Pop Pop”, and he will be remembered not only for his larger-than-life presence but also for the tender moments he shared with those he held dear.
Butch was preceded in death by his father, Melvin L. Race Sr., and his brother, Mark.
A true family man, Melvin “Butch” Race Jr. leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Forever more, fish on.
