It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Progno, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and treasured friend. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family.
Born and raised on Emerson Street in Rochester, NY, Mike lived a life rich in love, family, and adventure. At just 14 years old, he met the love of his life, Marie Tantalo. Their bond was instant and unbreakable, leading to a marriage that spanned 62 years and brought five children into the world.
Mike began his career alongside his father-in-law, Nick Tantalo, in the bowling business. He later managed Spencerport Bowl, a family legacy he proudly passed on to his sons. In addition to his love of bowling, Mike was a skilled blacksmith and passionate horse trainer, spending countless days at Finger Lakes Racetrack, another tradition he joyfully shared with his children.
An outdoorsman through and through, Mike raised beagles and loved rabbit hunting. On Saturday mornings, he could often be heard practicing hunting calls at the kitchen table. He was an avid fisherman and skilled deer hunter, admired for both his sharp instincts and his deep respect for nature. He shared this passion with his grandchildren, creating lasting memories by the backyard pond he built, teaching them to bait hooks and cast lines. In autumn, he would quietly wait in the woods behind his home for the big buck to appear. Whether tracking deer at dawn, mowing the lawn on a sunny afternoon, or sharing stories, Mike made the outdoors a place of learning, laughter, and connection. Through every experience, he passed down not just skills, but values, patience, appreciation for quiet moments, and the joy of time spent together. His legacy lives on in those memories and generations of outdoor traditions he helped shape.
Mike’s home was always a place of comfort, laughter, and open arms. From his favorite chair, he told stories that became the heartbeat of every gathering, captivating listeners with his warmth and wit. Visitors were greeted with a smile, a hearty laugh, and the familiar sound of him calling out, “Marie,” a name spoken with love.
Above all, Mike lived a life of unwavering devotion to his family. His children remained by his side, ensuring he was cared for with the same love he had always shown them. Even in his final days, Mike’s strength never wavered, and Marie never left his side. Their enduring love and loyalty became the foundation of a family rooted in kindness, resilience, and deep, abiding love. Mike’s legacy lives on in the lessons he taught, the stories he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ignatious and Bessie Progno; siblings, John Progno, Dale Progno, Nick Sortino, and Lillian Sortino; and his father- and mother-in-law, Nicholas and Mary Tantalo.
