With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life so fully lived, we remember a man whose laughter, strength, and spirit left a lasting mark on everyone lucky enough to know him.
An avid outdoorsman, he felt most at home under open skies—whether he was hunting at camp with his buddies, casting a line on a quiet fishing morning, golfing, or knocking down pins at the bowling alley. A natural athlete in every sense, his talent was evident from a young age. So much so that the Rochester Red Wings once had their eye on him, recognizing the raw ability and competitive spark that came so effortlessly to him.
He also cherished his time at the Finger Lakes horse races, where he both worked and enjoyed the excitement and camaraderie that came with it. Wherever there were people, stories, and a little friendly competition, he was in his element.
A proud volunteer fireman for the Town of Walworth, he gave generously of his time and energy to his community. He was especially known for the legendary pig roasts he loved to cook—gatherings filled with good food, hearty laughter, and memories that will last for generations. For him, it was never just about the meal; it was about bringing people together.
He was known far and wide for his unmistakable laugh and his sharp sense of humor. A master of friendly banter, right into his later years, he showed his affection through playful teasing and quick wit. He loved being around people, and people loved being around him. His presence filled a room, and his stories and jokes will echo in the hearts of family and friends forever.
His journey began in Puerto Rico, later taking him to Florida, and eventually to Walworth, where fate had something special in store. Working for his future in-laws, he met the love of his life, Cheryl. Together they built a beautiful life and shared 65 devoted years of marriage—a true testament to love, partnership, and commitment.
By trade, he was a highly respected autobody and fender craftsman whose skill and pride in his work were recognized throughout the city. His craftsmanship spoke for itself, earning him a reputation for excellence, integrity, and dedication.
He is predeceased by his loving wife, Cheryl Nieves; his parents, Emilio and Justina Nieves; his brothers, Paul, Ivan, Tony, and Nester Nieves; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Campbell and Vicki Bradshaw.
He is survived by his children, Joann (William) Colby Sr., Nelson (Tracee) Nieves Jr., and Douglas (Jennifer Nuci) Nieves Sr.; his grandchildren, Renee (Derek) Sterling, William (Ashley) Colby Jr., Laura (Nick Minuto) Colby, Kamri (Gregory) Reynolds, Douglas Nieves Jr., and Derek Nieves; his great-grandchildren, Colton, Gage, William, Wyatt, Emma, and Katie; his brother, Jorge Nieves; his brother-in-law, Grant Bradshaw; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Above all, he will be remembered as a man who lived fully, loved deeply, worked hard, and laughed often. His legacy lives on in the countless stories shared around campfires, dinner tables, and community gatherings—each one carrying a piece of his warmth and spirit.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
