Norma Meyer Reckhow

August 25, 1921 — July 20, 2015

IRONDEQUOIT:
Peacefully, Monday, July 20, 2015, at age 93.
Born in Rochester, she graduated at the top of her class at Franklin High School in 1939. With a full scholarship to the University of Rochester, she received a degree in Physics with honors in 1943.

Enlisting in the Navy's Officer Training Program, she was one of the first women scientists selected to a unique program of advanced electronics training at Harvard and MIT. It was here she met her beloved future husband, Warren, also an active-duty Navy Lieutenant. During WWII, she served as a Lieutenant at the Radar Design Section of the Bureau of Ships in Washington, DC. Following the war, she worked as a physicist at the Research Labs at Kodak, operating one of the world's first electron microscopes to study crystallography.

While raising their four children, she was an active volunteer and leader in the PTA, Cub Scouts, Brownies, the Irondequoit UCC, and Church Women United. In 1965, she helped found the Rochester affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America. Over the next 30 years she served in leadership roles at both the local and national level, and traveled thousands of miles around the country in support of adult literacy programs. Her lifelong passions for family, travel and nature filled her life.

Predeceased by husband of 62 years, Warren, and her sister Jane, she is survived by her children Robert of Edmonton, Alberta; Steven and wife Sylvia of Cambridge, MA; Wayne and wife Barbra of Bradenton, FL; and Anne and husband Chris Clarkson of Webster, NY; grandmother of Lynne, Nancy, Alyssa, Grant, Taylor, and Jensen Reckhow. Also survived by brother John Meyer of Macedon, NY; nieces and nephews David and Glenn Meyer, Emily Reid; Kenneth and David Reckhow, and Gail Collins; and many cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Ann's Home, and Lifetime Hospice for their compassionate care.
