Paul Mathis was born on August 16, 1955, in Oakland, California, to the late John Henry Mathis and Doris Coleman Mathis. While still a young child, the family relocated to Rochester, New York, where he was raised and educated in the Rochester City School District. He graduated from Madison High School in 1973 before answering the call to serve his country.
In 1973, Paul enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country and was honorably discharged and retired from the United States Air Force. He remained proud of his service throughout his life and was a devoted veteran.
Paul was affectionately known as the "brainiac" of the family. Gifted with a brilliant mind and sharp intellect, he was the one admired for his knowledge and insight. He had a joyful spirit, a deep appreciation for music, and found great happiness in spending time with his family and friends.
After leaving Rochester, Paul lived in several communities before settling in Penn Yan, which he proudly called home for many years. There, he was blessed with the devoted care and friendship of his caregiver, Bradley. He also cherished the frequent visits from his siblings, especially his sister, Inez, whose unwavering love, support, and presence meant so much to him.
We will forever remember his intelligence, his laughter, his love of music, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His memory will remain a treasured blessing in the hearts of all who knew him.
Following a brief illness Paul departed this life peacefully at the age of 70, Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at the Canandaigua Veterans Medical Center, with his beloved brother, John, by his side. Though Paul has answered his final roll call in this life, Paul’s service, kindness, and quiet strength will never be forgotten. May he rest in eternal peace.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Mathis and Doris Coleman Mathis.
He leaves to cherish his memory his brothers, Bishop Ronald (Marilyn) Mathis, Donald Mathis, John Mathis, all of Rochester, NY, David (Rachel) Mathis of Schenectady, New York, Chester Mathis, Mark (Melissa) Mathis of Rochester, NY and his sisters, Helen Thompson of New Haven, Florida, Inez Mathis of Rochester, NY, Diana Coleman of Syracuse, New York, and Alicia Fulton of Syracuse, New York; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, dear friends, and all who were blessed to know and love him.
