Raul Fernandez, U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, educator, and passionate World War II historian, passed away suddenly on April 22, 2026, in Rochester, NY. Born on May 3, 1946, in Havana, Cuba, Raul’s life was marked by dedication to his country, his community, and his personal passions.
Raul proudly served our nation in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, a period that profoundly shaped his sense of duty and resilience. Following his honorable military service, he committed his career to education within the Rochester City School District. Over the years, Raul rose through the ranks, culminating in his role as Vice Principal at Franklin High School, where he championed the growth and development of countless young minds until his retirement.
Beyond his professional achievements, Raul was a man of diverse interests and talents. He was an avid enthusiast of motorcycles and fast cars, finding joy and freedom on the open road. His artistic side flourished throughout his life, reflecting his deep creativity and keen eye for detail. Raul was also passionately immersed in World War II aircraft, often collecting artifacts and creating displays of aircraft from the era, preserving the stories and memories of a pivotal time with reverence and care. His favorite focus was the history of the Tuskegee Airmen.
He will be remembered with great respect and admiration by all who had the privilege to know him and be touched by his life. His contributions to education, his sacrifices for his country, and his unique passions will remain enduring reminders of a life well-lived.
Predeceased by his Father, Secundino Fernandez; Mother, Olga Fernandez.
He is survived by his loving Wife, Cherie Bevona; Son, Kenneth (Cristina) Fernandez; Sister-in-law, Devra Bevona; Brother-in-law, J. James (Anne) Bevona; as well as many family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Homesteads for Hope.
Burial will take place at Western New York National Cemetery on Thursday, May 7th, 2026, at 2pm.
