DeGroat, Reverend
David Everett
Chili: On February 27, 2011, Reverend David Everett DeGroat left to be with his Lord from the peace of his home. Born Oct. 27, 1935 to Cornelius and Grace DeGroat in Watertown, NY. The youngest of three brothers, David graduated from Lyons HS, Valedictorian, at 17. Four years later, after meeting the love of his life, Brenda Brackett, he graduated from Houghton College. They married in 1957 and continued their education together at Gordon College and Divinity School, Beverly Farm, MA. In 1966 David was ordained as an Assembly of God minister, and earned his Masters degree at Syracuse University. The pair settled in Palmyra and partnered with members of that community to begin the Palmyra Assembly of God, while both taught in Lyons and Palmyra. 1968 brought them to North Chili, where they taught at Roberts Wesleyan College. David also ministered as part of Faith Temple's leadership during this time. He later pastored the Zion Peoples Fellowship in Rochester and Grace Bible Presbyterian Church in Sodus Center.
David taught English and Social Studies at New Covenant Christian School and more recently at Lima Christian, until retiring at 67. He continued teaching and ministering as opportunity presented itself, at his church, Calvary Assembly of Chili and at the Open Door Mission.
David is predeceased by his brother, Paul, and survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Brenda; brother, Cornelius (Grace); sister-in-law, Jean DeGroat; daughter, Grace (Dale) Mead; son, David A. DeGroat; and grandsons, Everett Mead, Mason Mead, and David C. DeGroat.
David's family will receive friends during calling hours at Calvary Assembly, 3429 Chili Avenue on Wednesday, March 2, from 9 until 11 AM, with a memorial service immediately afterward. Interment will follow at the South Lyons Cemetery. Calvary Assembly of Chili will accept gifts to a memorial fund for David.
