Robert Boyd Miller, a retired history teacher, educational supervisor, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, in Rochester, New York. Born on August 19, 1932, in Washington, DC, Robert’s life was marked by a steadfast commitment to faith, family, education, and service.
Robert’s academic journey began at Houghton College, where he earned his bachelor’s degree, followed by a master’s degree in education from the University of Maryland. His professional career was distinguished and impactful. He initially taught history, sharing his passion for the subject with countless students before advancing to the role of instructional supervisor for the Prince George's County Maryland Board of Education. Even after retirement, Robert remained deeply involved in educational circles, particularly through his active participation in the Maryland State Retired Teachers Association, where he served as president for a term, demonstrating leadership and dedication to his colleagues.
His service extended beyond education. During the Korean War, Robert answered the call to serve his country in the Army medical corps, a testament to his sense of duty and compassion.
Robert treasured his faith and family above all else. He was a man you could always rely on—whether offering a listening ear or a helping hand, his kindness and support were unwavering. Growing up spending summers at the family home on the Chesapeake Bay nurtured his love for nature, a joy he continued after marriage with time at Camp-of-the-Woods in the Adirondacks. Among his simple pleasures were black-and-white milkshakes and root beer floats, small delights that added sweetness to his well-lived life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost sixty-eight years, June; his three children, Kathleen (Christopher) Jones, Deborah Miller, and Cynthia Miller; his six grandchildren, Rachael (Christopher) Burleigh, Ryan (Hillary) Jones, Tyler (Halley) Miller, Heather Smith, Amber Smith, and Robert Smith; and nine great-grandchildren. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were his proudest accomplishments, and their deep love for their Dad and Grandad was a source of immense joy.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Ella, and his sister, Doris Bowman. Their memory remains an integral part of his story.
Robert Boyd Miller’s legacy is one of dedication—to his students, his profession, and above all, to his family. His life was a beacon of faith, perseverance, and generosity. He will be remembered with great respect and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service for Robert will be held at a later date.
