Dr. Robert Condrate, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and internationally respected spectroscopy professor and researcher, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, at the age of 88. Born on January 19, 1938, in Worcester, Massachusetts, he was the beloved son of Adam and Angela Condrate.
Dr. Condrate’s lifelong passion for learning began early and shaped a remarkable academic journey. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and went on to receive his PhD from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He devoted more than 33 years to Alfred University as a Professor of Spectroscopy, where he became a cornerstone of the academic community. A gifted teacher and dedicated mentor, he inspired countless students, many of whom went on to make significant scientific contributions of their own. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he instilled in others his boundless curiosity and his guiding philosophy: “why and try.”
Affectionately known as “Mr. Bubbles,” Dr. Condrate gained international recognition for his pioneering research on bubbles in glass. His work not only advanced the field but also captured the public’s imagination, leading to a feature appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America in 1991. Over the course of his distinguished career, he authored more than 250 scientific publications, co-authored two books, and delivered over 400 lectures at national and international venues. He was an active member of numerous professional organizations and took great pride in being named a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry.
His commitment to service and country was equally profound. In the 1970s, he conducted research at Los Alamos National Laboratory, contributing his expertise to important national efforts. In the early 1980s, he volunteered his cutting-edge research during the renovation of the Statue of Liberty, helping to preserve one of America’s most treasured symbols.
Though he loved his career deeply, Dr. Condrate’s greatest joy was his family. He was married for over 65 years to the love of his life, Judith Campbell Condrate, who survives him. Together they built a life rooted in love, curiosity, and unwavering support. He is also survived by his three children: Barbara (David) Venanzi, Robert Condrate, and Laura Schwab. He was a devoted and adoring grandfather to Jordyn, Benjamin, Sofia, Avery, and Adelaide, each of whom he loved with his whole heart.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Adam and Angela Condrate and a sister, Dorothy Cummings.
He will be loved and remembered by three siblings, Raymond Condrate, Charlotte Losapio, and Christopher Gillies and sister-in-law, Linda St.John.
Dr. Condrate’s enthusiasm for learning never waned. Even in retirement, he continued to audit college courses with such vigor that he joked he could have earned two additional degrees. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to education, Alfred University annually presents The Bob Condrate Lifelong Learner Award, honoring those who embody his spirit of intellectual curiosity.
He will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his generosity, his warmth, and his enduring belief in the power of knowledge. His legacy lives on in his family, his students, and the countless lives he touched through his work and mentorship.
A private memorial service will be held with family, and a public celebration of his life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to supporting young engineers—an enduring tribute to a man who dedicated his life to discovery, learning, and love.
