Robert E. Darmer

December 11, 1941 — August 20, 2012

Robert E. "Bob" Darmer

Rochester: Went into the arms of Our Lord suddenly on Monday, August 20th 2012 at the age of 70. Bob was born on December 11th, 1941 in Jackson, Mississippi to Kenneth I. Darmer and the late Kathryn Harper Darmer. He grew up and was educated in Pierre, South Dakota. Upon high school graduation he enrolled at the Brown College School of Broadcasting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His first gig was giving the "at dawn" reports on Iowa chicken farms, which lasted until the farmers could no longer tolerate the satirical scenarios he fabricated daily between the roosters and the hens. Moving on to Nebraska, he successfully worked as a disc jockey at an AM station until once more his sense of humor setting Mozart and Bach to jitterbug beats went unappreciated. Shelving his radio career, he enlisted in the United States Army which afforded him a tour of Europe for the next three years. He was honorably discharged in 1964 and would later serve in the Army National Guard from 1978-1981. Upon settling in New York state in 1964, Bob graduated from Adirondack Community College in 1966 and the the State University of New York at New Paltz in 1968. He pursued additional coursework at Columbia University part time in social work before giving the next 34 years of his life as a civil servant in parole and probation. He first worked in Manhattan as a narcotic parole officer, then for the New York State Drug Commission under former governor Hugh Carey. His longest career stint found him in Rochester, New York as a parole officer.

In 1967, Bob married the love of his life, Helene Griffin. They celebrated 45 years of happiness and adventures this year. He is survived by Helene; their daughter, Aimee Darmer O'Connell; son-in-law, Michael O'Connell; three grandchildren, Bridget Catherine, Rory Patrick and Kerry Clare O'Connell, all of Rochester; his father, Kenneth I. Darmer and stepmother, Shirley, of Delmar, NY; brother, Ken and wife Karen of Houston, TX; brother, Larry and wife Brenda of Ruidoso, NM; brother, Don and wife Carol of Niskayuna, NY and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

There will be no calling hours. Bob's Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Pius Tenth Church in Chili, NY on Friday, August 24th at 9:30 AM with placement in the columbarium of Saint Pius Tenth Cemetery and luncheon at St. Pius Parish Center immediately following.

Bob's wishes were for no flowers sent to the family or to the church, but rather, to have memorial donations sent in care of:
