Roy J. Maratta

October 6, 1938 — September 4, 2024

85, of Irondequoit, NY died peacefully Wednesday, September 4, 2024 after a courageous battle with CLL.

He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Mary; sisters, Lucy Willis and Anita Sherman.

Roy taught in Elizabethtown, Pembroke, and Brighton, NY. Most of his career was in Brighton HS. He started there in 1966. In 1971, he took a sabbatical to Lake Charles, LA and earned his M.Ed.Admin degree and worked for many years as an administrator for Brighton High School. He coached many high school sports including track and field and football. His track and field book was published in 1980; it was written with the goal of including as many students in the practice, as opposed to cutting them from the team. He introduced the Outward Bound program to Brighton HS, and in the summer you could find him taking staff and students to the Adirondacks or the Caribbean to learn life changing skills. He was especially dedicated to helping troubled teens through sports and the Outward Bound program.

Roy loved traveling, nature and all things sports. In the winter, he could be found skiing at Bristol, Whiteface Mountains or out West. Tennis, handball, basketball, golf, hiking and yoga were also passions over the years. In addition, he and his wife, Judy, could be found at jazz festivals near and far, as well as traveling and dining. Judy and Roy are Franklin HS sweethearts. They started dating at 16 years old.

His biggest joy was his family, whom he loved dearly. He was the rock of our family and will be profoundly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy; children, Vickie (Steve) Curry, Jill (Tony) McLeod, Steve (Larysa) Maratta; grandchildren, Amanda (Vince) Venditti, Dima and Veronica Maratta; great-grandchildren, Vivienne and Sophia Venditti. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

At his request, there will be no calling hours.
