Sharon “Sherry” Jones, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, church mother, and friend, was born on February 26, 1956, in Rochester, New York, to Cora Lee Houser (Jones) and Robert Lee Houser. A lifelong Rochester resident, Sharon was deeply rooted in her family, her faith, her church, and the community she loved.
A proud graduate of Monroe High School, class of 1973. Sharon spent many years caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Physical Therapy Aide at Monroe Community Hospital and Hill Haven. Her heart for service extended far beyond her profession. She was a caretaker by nature, always ready to help family, friends, and anyone in need.
Sharon was a lifelong and faithful member of the Nazareth Church of Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, later continuing her walk with the Lord at Amazing Grace Church. She loved attending church, reading her Bible, singing in the choir, serving through the church pantry, and helping wherever she was needed. She also served as a mother of the church. Even during her battle with pancreatic cancer, she remained committed to her faith and served whenever she was able.
Above all, Sharon loved God and loved people. She expressed that love by caring for others, feeding people, praying for them, and making sure they knew they mattered. She was an exceptional cook, especially known for the elaborate Thanksgiving dinners she prepared with pride and joy. Her home was a place where family and friends could gather, fellowship, and feel loved. Family was at the center of Sharon’s life. She was especially proud of her son, Gary, and embraced his wife, Shannon, as a daughter in her own right. Her grandchildren, Gary Jr. and Jeremiah, held a special place in her heart, cherishing spending time with them. She encouraged them in church and expected them to know their Scriptures. Her love for her grandchildren was unconditional and unwavering. She was also eagerly awaiting the arrival of her great-grandson, Khazmir.
Sharon had a personality all her own loving, protective, outspoken, strong-minded, and caring. She loved gospel music, spicy food, and especially shopping. She could spend hours looking for sales, discounts, and a good bargain. That love of finding a deal was something she passed along to Gary, who also enjoyed a good deal or what he calls a “hookup.” It was one of those special similarities between mother and son that brought them and the family another reason to smile. Sharon was rarely without one of her many bags and was especially known for her collection of white sweaters. She also took great pride in her church attire and carefully coordinated her outfits, head coverings, suits, and shoes.
Sharon had an incredible memory and a wealth of knowledge about her family and its history, preserving stories and details that helped keep those who came before her alive in the memories of those who followed.
Even in her final days, Sharon remained connected to the God she had served faithfully throughout her life. During hospice, Pastor Walker visited with her, reading Scripture and singing with her. Though very weak, Sharon began tapping her foot and attempting to lift her hands as they worshiped together. Shortly afterward, she peacefully departed this life a final reflection of a woman whose faith was not merely something she professed, but something she lived.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Cora Lee Houser (Jones) and Robert Lee Houser; and her siblings, Beverly Wadley, Larry “Andy” Houser, Priscilla Ford, and Corrine Houser.
She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, Gary Jones; daughter-in-law, Shannon Jones; grandchildren, Gary Jones Jr. and Jeremiah Jones; expected great-grandson, Khazmir; siblings, Diane Jones, Gregory Houser, Michael Houser, Darryl Houser, Kathy Houser, Norman (Helen) Houser, Lisa Houser, Betty Jean Wright-Tucker, Pamela Miller, and Milton Houser-Bell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, extended family, and dear friends.
Well done Sherry. Your work here is finished. May you rest in the presence of the Lord, knowing that you were deeply loved and will never be forgotten.
