Born and raised in Forty Fort Pennsylvania as one of two daughters, Shirley, after graduating from the Wyoming Seminary married Fred G. Gay in 1940 and moved to Rochester so Fred could work for Bausch & Lomb as a frames designer and in war times, as a designer of bomb sights. As a member of the Greece Baptist Church, she served as Church Secretary, Chairman of the Board of Deacons and President of the Women's Society. Shirley worked at the Grinnell's Travel Agency for 17 years as the executive secretary.
She and Fred traveled to 40 states, 5 continents including 15 trips to Europe, 34 countries and 14 islands. Their favorite destination was Hawaii. To be near the water, they purchased a house on Lake Ontario and then rented an apartment for a few years on Long Pond Shores. After retirement, Shirley and Fred spent 19 winters in Florida, utilizing the auto train when the 3 day drive became too strenuous. 17 of those years were in North Redington Beach.
Thank you to the staff of the Episcopal Church Home for their loving care of Shirley for 10 years.
A memorial service will be held for Shirley and Fred, who passed July 11, 2007, at the convenience of the family.
