Greece: Wednesday December 18, 2013 at age 103. Predeceased by her mother Margaret (Foos) Mathony and father John Mathony; sisters Lucille Fields (William), Marie Donner (Albert) and Martha Brion (Harry). Survived by her sister Helen Pancoast (Kenneth), a niece Elaine Bird (Robert), a nephew Donald Brion (Maria), great-nieces and nephews Susan Bird, Donna Ericksen (Craig), Robyn Luczkowiak (Michael), Bobbie Mohney (Dennis), James Bird (Natalie), David Bird (Lisa Marie), Thomas Bird, and their children.

Born in Canandaigua, NY on January 25, 1910, Virginia spent her early years living in Canandaigua, Rochester and Vine Valley helping her mother run a summer resort. During WWII, she served in the WAVES earning a rank of Specialist Q, First Class, focusing on wartime communications. After the war, she moved to Whittier, CA where she lived close to her sister Lucille and her husband while working as a secretary at the local high school. During the 1960's, she joined the University of the Seven Seas as secretary to the Dean and made several trips around the world.

Virginia retired in 1965. Her retirement years in California were spent preserving the history of Whittier. She was involved in the creation and operation of the Whittier Historical Museum where she provided more than 30 years of dedicated service. She wrote 3 books on the history of Whittier and received many awards and recognitions over the years.

In 1984, she was named Historian of the Year by the Whittier Historical Society. In 2003, she was the grand marshal of Whittier's Founders Day Parade. In 2004, Virginia returned to her roots in Rochester to live with her sister Helen at The Villages. She will be dearly missed by everyone who had the opportunity of knowing her.
